The story behind the print
Hadrian’s Wall has been a constant presence in my life having lived close to it in the East and the West. I approached the making of this print by visiting the wall, some of which is apparent in Heddon and other parts which are not visible, close to Milecastle 13. I looked and observed closely, drawing from the site then lay down among the buttercups looking at the clouds, thinking myself into the past of the land.
Since lockdown, I have been working in a more painterly way that is not quite representative or yet purely abstract. Working in monotype has allowed a freedom of visual expression that evolves over the repetitions of ink marks on the plate. I have always loved the sumptuousness of colour mixing and taking inspiration from the Scottish Colourists, I have indulged this in the process of making this work.
