The story behind the print
John-Grey
Along side the banks of the River Eden runs the Hadrian’s Wall Trail. Close by is Bitts Park, the first public park established in Carlisle. The Romans built a bridge which crossed the River Eden joining the north and south sides. Today the north side of the river is home to the Carlisle cricket ground and the south side Bitts Park.
However originally the south side was the location of the Roman fort and town ‘Lugavalium’. In the 1950’s original remaining stones from the Roman bridge where dredged from the river and placed within Bitts Park. I chose to create a print representing the idea that this area of the Hadrian’s Wall Trail, is still being used and enjoyed by locals and visitors and will continue to be for many more centuries to come. It is now a place of escape, an area to enjoy the outdoors and recreation and it’s this idea that I have tried to reflect in my print.
