The story behind the print
John-Grey
Hadrian’s Wall Mile 45 includes Walltown Crags and the now disused Walltown East Quarry. On top of the crags substantial sections of wall are a significant presence, reminders of the past presence of the Roman Army and how they imposed that presence on the landscape. At the old East Quarry this changes dramatically.
The wall ends abruptly at the edge of the quarry, its’ original line disappearing into the empty space excavated by the quarrymen who are themselves now also absent from the landscape. I have tried to represent these contrasting narratives in my print. I chose to use modern photosensitive plates that allow me to combine modern digital imaging with the 500 year old process of printing etchings on paper using a press.
