The story behind the print
Hearing about the NP project ‘Hadrian’s Wall 1900’ immediately brought back fond memories of family walks from Steele Rigg to Housesteads and so I requested Steel Rigg – Milecastle 39 to 40 to be ‘my stone’.
The rugged drama of the Whin Sill as it towers above the lake of Crag Lough took shape on the Collagraph card as I cut out its rocky ravines and when printed on top of them the dark blue Etching lines accentuated their jagged shapes.
In the distance, around Hotbanks Farm, the beauty of the fields is echoed in inks of soft pale yellows and greens, then the drama returns as the ancient wall suddenly appears and follows the curving contours of a huge hill and inhospitable sunken valley to culminate in the ruins of Milecastle 39-40.
